STATUS OF LAND ADMINISTRATION IN SOUTH SUDAN

Abstract

Land is the basis of social, economic, and political development in most societies as it exhibits a close relationship to the style and quality of living of the society. There are many demands on land resources therefore, land has been frequently the basis of social upheaval and much effort was devoted to developing systems to administer land rights.

Due to the influence of the different colonial powers, land administration systems in Africa vary from one country to another. To better understand the land administration systems in the region, the Eastern Africa land Administration Network (EALAN) attempts to carry a comparative analysis of land administration systems in the member countries. This paper illustrates the status of land Administration System in South Sudan by considering the institutional, legal, administrative and technical framework. The agencies responsible for the main elements of land administration and the challenges facing these agencies were also presented. The paper concluded by identifying areas of the needs for the development of land administration institutions in South Sudan.
